FOODOPIA

a native iOS application that helps explore food like never before!

Foodopia started with the idea of looking at ways to help people explore new flavors and dishes.

PROBLEMS:

1. There are many resources/apps/books/blogs to help you find new restaurants, recipes or dishes, but no one knows how much they have explored and how much is left to explore!

2. There are apps to help you explore different restaurants around the city and the world, but very few that allow you to explore by searching for dishes.

AUDIENCE:

  • All the food lovers around the world!

  • Working men and women between (18-30) who do not have time to cook and often get bored of same flavors

  • Millenials who are all about Instagramming their new food discoveries.

MY ROLE:

I worked independently on the user experience and interface of the project. From user research, creating storyboards, user flows, wireframing (both pen-paper and Balsamic) to final prototype and mockup. Currently working with the developer for the Android OS and design. The project is set to be launched in Asia at the end of 2017.

USER PERSONA:

Interviews

Jessica and Brian

eat out 2-3 times

Grime

eats out daily

  • Works 9-5 job.

  • Travels very often for work.

  • Has to research every time when he does to a new city.

  • Likes high-end restaurants

Goals:

  • Live together since the last 3 years.

  • Cook a lot at home, but out 2/3 times a week to try something new.

  • Love food!

  • Grime is a personal trainer.

  • He loves traveling and food.

  • He is a vegetarian.

  • Wants to try different cuisines and flavors.

Pain Points

  • Even after going to the best restaurant, does not know what to order.

  • Wants to break away from always trying safe dishes.

  • Wants to share his favorite dishes with his friends

  • It's hard to track flavors tried since every restaurant invents its name for their specialties and dishes.

  • Want an easy way to document dishes tried and dishes we want to try.

  • Claims its easy to find good restaurants but not find good meals.

  • Not all dishes served in a restaurant are the best.

  • Hard to find best vegetarian dishes around.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS:

FOODSPOTTING

Foodspotting is a visual guide to good food and where to find it. Instead of reviewing restaurants, you can recommend great dishes and see what others recommend wherever you go.

Strengths:

  • Look up your location or move & scan the map to fine tune it.

  • Find your favorite restaurant to see what foodspotters & friends love there.

  • Search for a particular dish that you're craving by name (noodles) or type (red velvet).

Weaknesses:

  • No count of dishes around and dishes tried.

  • Interface is boring and slow

  • Image quality not very good

CRITYK

Crityk is a community platform that lets you explore, discover, review, share and bookmark delights and spots.

Strengths:

  • Connect with friends and like-minded individuals to see where and what they are eating.

  •  Rate all your delights by using our simple rating scale makes foodie reviews a breeze.

  •  Bookmark all the delights and spots you want to try all around the country.

  •  Search & Explore new favorite spots and delights for now or for later.

Weaknesses:

  • Same as Food-Spotting

  • Filter option not very intuitive

  • Again no count of dishes tried vs not tried

COMPETITIVE DIFFERENTIATORS:

  • Dish Count: People often keep repeating dishes without realized how many great flavors they are missing out on, by providing a platform to help them keep a record of dishes tried vs the dishes around, one will be more inclined to try a new dish than repeating an old favorite. This will help them explore more!

  • Gamification: Comparing count with friends and family will push people to try more dishes in order to keep up with friends and other foodopians.

  • Camera Filter: Giving more filters to the camera will make the recording process fun of the users.

USER FLOW DIAGRAM:

To help guide my design process, I created a user flow early on during the project.

1: Represents the ideal path that the primary user takes to explore a new dish using filters.

2: Represents the path to explore dishes recorded by experts.

3: Represents the path that the primary user takes to record a dish.

RETROSPECTIVE"

  • Communication: We jumped into the project right after our first meeting. This made the vision a bit blurry. We had to recap and made a point of touching base every few steps on both specs and the concepts. This was then followed on every project going forward.

  • Assumptions: A few assumptions made at the start of the projects were soon canceled out after the interviews. Shows me how important it is to test every theory.
