URBAN INJECTOR_ URBAN DESIGN

Subject : Urban Design_2011

Site : Juhu_Mumbai

Program : Regenerating storm water drain and fishing village market

Team: Malika Singh, Palak Gadodia, Divya Kapuria, Ronak hinghar

The first task of this project was identification of varied interfaces in Juhu, a suburban neighborhood in Mumbai. The interface and its effect on the human psyche, society and surrounding environment were studied and analyzed carefully in order to propose a plan for urban renewal.

Keeping this objective in mind, nallah (storm water drain running through the center of the city) was seen as a connector and facilitator of various nodes, junctions and programs. After the study of current urban site conditions of the nallah and its adjoining spaces, an intervention was proposed  to either enhance or change the existing urban context.

As part of the urban design studio, the suburban area of Juhu was selected. Detailed demographic and programmatic studies of the area were carried out along with studying the existing infrastructure of the area. The studies were aimed at identifying emergent urban conditions in the area and understanding their impact on social, economic, infra-structural and ecological  development of the area.

The insert extends all the way to the kohliwada fishing village providing them with a new designated market space at a much larger scale to meet their growing needs. Also space is provided for the local fishermen to catch, segregate and process the fish before exporting or selling the fish off in the city market. The modulation of the nallah  itself towards the end, (approaching the Arabian sea) allows to provide the city with space to breed and catch fish (Mariculture). Plenty of open pockets in the intervention provide a scope for future insertion of various new programs as per site requirements.

Collectively, this kind of reorganization and addition of new programs (mariculture, new transport systems-ferry and boats) allows us to re-look at this entire node as a generator of various activities. This would encourage more locals to join and continue their ancestral tradition of fishing. More people from around the city would start using this insert which will provide the required exposure to this forgotten land and help bring the Gaothan in foreground.

This model shows the desired sponse of interaction between the insert and the site.
